Constructing A Future with HSL Constructor
For most people, the tea break is a time to catch up with the latest office gossip or take a breather from work. For Charles Quek, it is the perfect time to start learning. “Go buy coffee for your workers. Slowly, they will open up to you and teach you things that only experience can garner,” he shares.
Charles Quek has 15 years of life lessons to dish out as the Executive Director of HSL Constructor, a civil engineering company with interests in marine and ground engineering projects. He has seen the company grow from a three-man operation working from a rented space in Bedok Industrial Park to a medium-sized enterprise that employs 800 people and is still growing.
One of the beneficiaries of Charles’ experience is Jeremy Tay, a Management Executive. Despite being a greenhorn in the engineering industry, the 25-year-old NUS alumnus has been able to deal with clients and contractors almost twice his age. “I have grown more mature have expanded my intellectual capabilities with HSL. This is very important when I’m dealing with people,” Jeremy reveals.
He attributes his growth to HSL’s holistic working experience, which allows employees to “move horizontally and experience rotation” instead of stagnating in one department. “It’s very important to know the whole operation for you to appreciate your current job scope,” Jeremy explains. “I think this is very enriching for young graduates.”
Despite garnering a host of safety awards and forging a reputation for itself in the industry, HSL is not contented to rest on its laurels. In a concerted effort to streamline its operations, HSL just completed a rebranding exercise with a new logo, new vision and “a renewed optimism for their business”.
The company is also exploring regional business development opportunities overseas. “We are a very forward-looking SME. Our business direction is very much targeted at a global sense,” Jeremy enthuses.
Despite their drive to elevate the company to new heights, HSL understands that it is the employees who help make growth happen. The organisation prides itself as a very progressive company. “We have flexible work arrangements and a plethora of programmes that help employees better manage their work-life effectiveness,” Charles reveals. “We are an adaptable company and willing to accommodate to people’s needs.”
Charles believes in keeping their employees engaged and excited about the company’s growth prospects. “This new HSL is a more confident and focused company,” he proudly says.
Jeremy agrees with Charles’ sentiments, citing the company’s precise professionalism in their services as a big draw for local graduates. “If you are looking for an enterprising company that devotes a lot of resources to the human aspect and with potential for tremendous growth in the future, then HSL is the one for you,” he concludes.
