Lim Sing Tian

Long Service & Growth
Deputy Director
Why did you decide to join HSL?
When you are passionate about something, you set goals and aim high. And surely HSL is the place whereby a fresh civil engineering graduate like me can realize their fullest potential through exposure to myriad kind of marine civil engineering projects.
What was your initial involvement in HSL?
In 1999, HSL’s head office was located in an industrial park with a staff strength of about 20. My first project was in Singapore Refining Company (SRC) where I was the engineer in charge of overall project planning and supervision of project team. However, due to limited manpower at that time, I usually need to put on different hats to assume other roles when required. Subsequently, I moved on to handling a wide variety of projects in both marine and land civil engineering. I am fortunate to be given the opportunities to work with different multinational clients like ExxonMobil, Seraya Chemical, Oiltanking, and also in Vopak Terminals and Tankstore.
What keeps you moving?
Over the years in HSL, diversity and magnitude of the projects I managed allowed me to gain invaluable experiences and technical knowledge. Additional portfolios like heading the Safety Health & Environment department to being advisor to Recreation Club Committee were some of the many roles entrusted to me. I am glad that I am able to take on numerous tasks and assume the different roles in an effective manner. All these aid towards the development necessary for my career growth. With management support and sponsorship, I managed to pursue my Masters in Civil Engineering and completed it in 2004.
What are you currently working on?
Currently, I am the Deputy DIrector – Projects, overseeing a team of ten, with the primary responsibilities of project tendering and project management. I am proud to say that I have contributed to the growth of the Company in many ways and I am able to do so because of the learning and development opportunities accorded to me in the past ten years. Over the years, I have learnt that Project Management is about managing and balancing the project scope and resources. Every project presents different challenges and learning goals. When the challenges are overcome and projects are successfully completed on time, the job satisfaction is truly rewarding. I am grateful to HSL for the growth opportunities and I hope to be an effective coach to the young engineers. After all these years, I still have fond memories of my first day of work attending Oil/Petrochemical Safety Orientation Course.
