Daphne Phua

Mother of 2, Work Life Integration
Quantity Surveyor
Why did you decide to join HSL?
As a mother of two, a boy age three and a girl age one, I value quality time with my family. Hence, I was motivated to join HSL in Dec 07 because of the comprehensive Work Life Programme that it has in place. With the numerous family-friendly initiatives under the programme, I am able to manage my personal life and work life in an effective and rewarding manner.
How was your experience in HSL at the beginning?
As a Quantity Surveyor, I was involved in handling claims and tenders which provided opportunities to work closely with clients, project managers, suppliers, directors and many more. Few months into the work, I was expecting my second child. My initial reaction was to keep it from my bosses, worrying that I may be viewed as unproductive and taking advantage of the Company. However, when I eventually told them, to my surprise and relief, they were very happy for me!
What do you think of the Work Life Programme?
As a working mother, I truly appreciate the flexibility of the Work Life Programme. Often, both of my children fall sick easily, especially my elder child, who has a weaker health. As such, I am required to shoulder more childcare responsibilities and take urgent leave to attend to my children and whenever I inform my immediate superior, he, without fail will allow me to go on leave on the assurance that I meet my work goals. This strong and trusting relationship is something that I truly value and I am proud to be in an organization whereby contributions are measured by results and not physical visibility.
What are you currently working on?
Claims, tenders and I am currently the secretary of the Recreation Club Committee, whereby I’m able to inject fun and laughter into the organization. Whether it’s in the office or at home, I know that I can perform my tasks in an effectively manner.
